The First Chakra: Muladhara – The Root of Security and Overcoming Fear

Updated: Apr 11

Explore the significance of the first chakra (Muladhara), how fear can block it, and practical ways to release fear, achieve inner security, and create a more fulfilled life.

The first chakra, known as the Muladhara or root chakra, is located at the base of our spine, near the urogenital system. This chakra is activated at the very beginning of our lives, but over time, under the influence of our environment and experiences, it can become blocked.

The Muladhara governs our basic need for survival, our sense of security, and is primarily influenced by fear. But how can we manage and overcome this fear?

The Dalai Lama’s Wisdom on Fear

To begin, let's reflect on the words of the Dalai Lama: "If a problem has a solution, then there’s no need to worry, and if a problem doesn’t have a solution, then there’s no reason to worry."

This insightful quote suggests that worrying or being fearful does not contribute to solving problems. Whether the issue can be solved or not, fear about the future brings no benefit. So, the question is: Can we change ourselves in a way that reduces fear?

Gradual Change: A Path to a Better Life

The answer is yes, but it doesn’t need to happen overnight. By gradually shifting our mindset and behavior, we can improve our quality of life, our lifestyle, and our psychological and physical well-being. Small, consistent changes will ultimately lead to greater security and peace of mind.

Physical Manifestations of a Blocked Root Chakra

When the root chakra is blocked, it can manifest in physical symptoms such as lower back pain. If you feel a persistent fear about your material security or a sense of not belonging in your environment, it could be a sign that your first chakra is out of balance. You may feel unable to express your true self or struggle to connect with your surroundings. These are all indicators of a blocked Muladhara.

Another common sign is the tendency to accumulate unnecessary items—things you no longer use or need. This could include old clothes, discarded packaging, or excess food. It’s important to recognize this as a manifestation of fear, a fear of not having enough. Muladhara energy, when blocked, often manifests in a hoarding mentality.

Letting Go and Creating Security

To unblock the root chakra, start by cleaning and organizing your space. Let go of items that no longer serve you—whether by donating, selling, or simply discarding them. This act of releasing what’s unnecessary symbolizes your inner willingness to let go of fear and the belief that you’ll be lacking in the future. By clearing out physical clutter, you create mental and emotional space for security and abundance.

It’s also essential to remember that fear of material security doesn’t only affect those who have little. From my experience, even wealthy individuals can have a blocked Muladhara. Many work relentlessly out of fear, accumulating money, but never truly addressing the internal sense of insecurity that drives their actions. External wealth cannot resolve internal fears.

The Shift: Creating Inner Security First

The key is this: the resolution doesn’t come from the outside in, but from the inside out. To create lasting security, you must first cultivate a sense of inner peace and assurance, regardless of external circumstances. Once you establish this inner foundation, your external circumstances will begin to shift. You’ll find yourself living a more relaxed, fulfilled life, free from the constant grip of fear, secure in yourself, and confident that you have everything you need.
