How to Protect Yourself from Negative Influences

Updated: Apr 11

Learn how to protect yourself from negative influences by focusing on self-love, gratitude, and positive energy.

Since this world is a whole made up of two polarities, it's completely normal that while some people wish us well, others may cause us harm—whether intentionally or unintentionally. When I say that someone might harm us unintentionally, it could be out of good intentions. For example, when someone worries about us, the vibration of worry attracts exactly what the person fears. In other words, when you fear that something bad might happen to you, that’s exactly what you end up attracting. It’s similar to when you search for “I don’t want to watch football” on Google—the results will be all about football. The same goes for people who care about us: their fears about us may inadvertently influence us to experience exactly what they are afraid of.

For instance, when people ask me, "Isn’t it sad when a client comes to you with a difficult situation?" I always respond: one thing is to feel pity for someone, and that does harm, but another thing is to empathize without feeling their pain during the treatment, as this only sends more pain their way.

When helping others, it’s important to empathize and understand them but never pity them, as the vibration of pity only attracts more of the same negative emotions. Our being functions similarly to how we get addicted to substances. When we fill our body with a particular emotion, our body "becomes hooked" and craves more of it. If the emotion is sadness, we naturally gravitate toward music, topics, or environments that promote sadness, and our body seeks more of what it has become accustomed to—much like an addiction to substances. If we grew up with parents who exhibited a particular behavior, we often unknowingly seek out partners who behave similarly, as our body is craving the "drug" it’s used to.

How to Break Free from Negative Influences

To free ourselves from these influences, the first step I take in my Reiki treatments is to remove these accumulated emotions that have been stored in our bodies for a long time—on both a subconscious and energetic level. This work often translates into conscious awareness and emotional healing.

Once the emotional clutter has been cleared, we proceed to mental awareness so that both our minds and emotions can be aligned in a new life approach. This approach doesn’t focus on suffering, pain, sadness, or hate but on love, happiness, abundance, and more positive vibrations. As with the "drug" analogy, once we become accustomed to these positive emotions, our bodies will crave more of them, and we will continue to attract them.

It’s important to remember that the world operates through duality. Where there is good, there is also bad. So, our focus should be on the good and the positive, accepting the "bad" as part of life—challenges to overcome for our growth—but not allowing them to dominate our focus.

A Practical Example

For instance, I may have a client whose professional life is in order but who struggles with relationships. This client is solely focused on the problem in their personal life—one side of the whole—without showing gratitude for their successful career. As a result, the vibration of their unhappiness only attracts more negativity, as they’re fixated on it. I’ve simplified this, but it’s to give you a clear example from practice.

The Power of Gratitude

What I recommend is that every morning, before thinking about what’s still unresolved in your life, take a moment to focus on everything you have, everything that’s going well, and feel gratitude and happiness for it. By doing so, you will attract more of the same positive energy into your life across all areas.

Protecting Yourself from Negative Influences

The most powerful protection from negative influences—whether external or self-inflicted—is, believe it or not, self-love. When you truly love yourself and believe in yourself without any complexes, judgment, or fear, no one can harm you.
